With a perfect forecast for the bay on Thursday, Kyle and I couldn’t resist an early session at the Ormiston weedbeds. We arrived pre-dawn at the boatramp to calm conditions and to be the only ones there. We launched quickly and five minutes later we were throwing lures around the weedbeds in the dark. Very quiet to begin with, but we knew it was just a matter of time before the tailor moved in. There have also been masses of bream caught in the bay this winter.
As the morning sky started to lighten we could see bait schools being harassed by hungry predators. Our fluttersticks and poppers began to wreak some havoc with bream after bream coming aboard and the occasional small tailor.
Kyle then found a honey hole and managed three tailor in three casts, the smallest being 48cm and the biggest being his new bay PB tailor at 51cm. Solid fish. We managed to get hits and hook-ups regularly until about 8.30am when the sun got too high and then it got tough until we called it a day around 10.30am.
The good news is that we ended up with 7 tailor, 15 bream, a single flathead and half a dozen pike. The bad news is that we lost three fluttersticks and a frenzy popper to bite offs – irreplaceable lures as they are no longer made. I trialled a Luckycraft Wander Slim 70 which looks like a flutterstick but doesn’t have the same enticing action. I did catch a 44cm tailor on it though…
Another fun morning fishing the shallows of Moreton Bay.
Cheers
Pete & Kyle
