We set out for the long weekend at Rainbow Beach towing the little boat for a bit of fishing in the sandy straights. The cold weather came on strong after the rainy days last week and combined with 30+ knot west winds on Saturday - it was subartic! So after a quick look it forced us off the water and back to the more tolarable conditions of base.
Sunday dawned a perfect day in comparison though still bitterly cold. Luke was having withdrawal symptoms having not caught a Barra since moving to the Gold Coast in January. And we'd heard reports of the odd Barra being caught so that was all the encouragement we needed.
After a slow start, where the two 60cm Flatheads I managed to catch were assigned to the icebox and a couple of 'change points', Luke started jumping up and down like a school kid - when he pulled the hook on a confirmed Barra sighting.
Having never caught a Barra myself, I wanted in on the action too but a quick cast into the same spot saw me hook another Barra straight away, but my 6lb Bream outfit was no match.
Running over the same spot again, it was only a matter of minutes before Luke got his fix landing a 70cm Barra closely followed by another of the same size.
All up, despite the cold, was a wonderful weekend in the straight. We also scored a big Slatey Bream which had us fooled thinking it was something decent that we sent back and a Grunter for me to take home.
