Nice work Jeff ..... We saw some good Jacks come from open water during our last Hinchinbrook trip ...... incl a mates double ( 2 fish on the one lure .... at the same time)
as you've pointed out - a hole or shelf can be just as good as a prominent snag ( maybe even better .... if it has good depth at any tide)

Well done Jeff, a 50cm Jack is a cracker! I haven't caught one in years, so I'm going to make it my goal this summer.
I did the opposite to you on friday night, I pulled a flathead off a bridge pylon. The lure wasn't deep either. Probably on 2-3 foot down in 10 - 12 foot of water????
It must have been a nice warm feeling when you hooked that bad boy in open water!
Well done,
Matt

Wow thanks for that, I haven't seen it in years. I wish it was that easy everytime! Those were the days, pre marriage and kids, with sooooooo much fishing time!
We were unbelievably lucky filming that segment. First time we tried filming, we nailed those two cracking jacks! That 58 is still a PB, if I can claim it, because my brother actually hooked it (on a rod I rigged and cast out), but he handed the rod to me, so he could film it.
I still love those sessions, lure fishing late afternoon, and then baiting after dark around a tide change.
How good are Jacks! I hooked a 50 plus last weekend, and got a good reminder of the raw explosive power of a solid jack - lasted about 2.5 seconds!
Cheers,
Matt
